Building a Greener Community: Massena Electric's Commitment to Energy Conservation

At Massena Electric, we are deeply committed to fostering a better environment and a stronger community. One of the most impactful ways we can achieve this is through energy conservation. By conserving energy, we not only reduce our reliance on electricity produced by oil and coal but also benefit ourselves with lower bills.

Approximately 75% of the energy distributed by Massena Electric comes from renewable resources, reflecting our dedication to a sustainable future. By conserving energy and using it more efficiently, we can further increase the percentage of renewable energy in our distribution.

We believe that energy conservation is a responsibility shared by all, and Massena Electric has taken significant steps to promote this important cause. Over the past five years, we have distributed over 900 trees to our customers, helping conserve energy and beautify our community simultaneously. This effort has earned Massena Electric annual recognition from the National Arbor Day Foundation as a "Tree Line USA" utility. This esteemed program, sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the National Association of State Foresters, acknowledges utilities that prioritize practices safeguarding and enhancing urban forests. By meeting the program's three requirements of Quality Tree Care, Annual Worker Training, and Tree Planting and Public Education, we proudly contribute to the betterment of community forests.

Receiving the "Tree Line USA" recognition reflects Massena Electric's unwavering commitment to both our community and the environment. We take great pride in this achievement, as it mirrors our organization's values and dedication to making a positive impact.

Together, let's continue building a greener future, where energy conservation and environmental stewardship thrive in harmony with our vibrant community.

Here are some additional steps you can do as a consumer to reduce your electric bill, but also help conserve Energy:

Reduce Energy Consumption During Peak Hours

The highest usage hours of the day are between 4:00pm and 8:00pm, which are also the most costly hours of the day for Massena Electric to purchase power.  So please:

  • Shift household chores and activities away from peak periods. Wait to run your dishwasher, or dryer, until after 8:00pm, for instance.

  • Use the most energy efficient appliances you have. Your microwave oven, for example, uses considerably less energy than your stove or cook top (chart)

Use Energy Efficiently
  • Turn off lights when not in use. About 20% of the typical home electric bill is lighting.

  • Turn off your computer when you are done with your session.

  • Turn off the TV or Radio when leaving a room.

Be aware of your energy consumption, and try to get in the habit of using energy efficiently year-round.

Buy Smart

The Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), encourages Americans to replace older appliances, bulbs and fixtures in their home with ones that have earned the Energy Star label. These items, that have earned the Energy Star Label, provide significant energy and costs savings, and provide a more comfortable home.

Transitioning to Energy Star products also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additional steps participants can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions include:

  • improving their heating and cooling systems to run more efficiently
  • turning down their thermostats while away from home and when asleep
  • seal leaks in duct systems
  • ensure that their home is well insulated
  • recycle old refrigerators

Use the energy you need, but use it wisely! You will help Massena Electric avoid purchasing more expensive power - and that, in turn, will help keep your electric rates stable.
