Here you will find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our meter change out program.

Since inception, Massena Electric has continually invested in its operations resulting in a reliable and efficient electric distribution system. Improvements have included large-scale upgrades at our substations, replacing the infrastructure serving your home or business, as well as changing the metering system used to register usage at each location we serve. 


Over the next few weeks, Massena Electric is changing out a subset of our meters as we evaluate a new metering system. The impact on our customers will be minimal, and Massena Electric will continue to read your meter monthly, the same as we have done since inception.


  • Why is Massena Electric changing out its meters?

    Like aging appliances and equipment, our electric metering system has reached end of its useful life.  Massena Electric will be testing a new metering system and to do so will install new meters in certain areas of our service territory as part of the evaluation process.  Since 2005 Massena Electric has read your electric meter monthly using Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology.  The new meters will continue to be read remotely and monthly, allowing Massena Electric to operate efficiently.

  • Who owns the electric meter on my house or business?

    Massena Electric owns the electric meter and maintains the system used to calculate your bill.  The new meters use updated reading technology that will replace the current system as it is phased out.  This technology has been approved by Massena Electric’s regulator and will help Massena Electric continue providing customers with accurate usage information for another 20+ years.

  • Who will be performing the meter replacements?

    Massena Electric staff will be changing out the meters.  These technicians are experienced personnel and employees of Massena Electric, not an outside contractor.  When performing the changes they will be wearing apparel with a Massena Electric logo and driving vehicles with our logo. 

  • Do I need to be home or is there anything I need to do?

    You do not need to be home, and no action is required for the meter upgrade.  During the replacement, there will be a brief interruption to your electric service.  Meter upgrades are scheduled Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Massena Electric will not replace meters on weekends or holidays.

  • Are there additional benefits to the new meters?

    These new meters will increase Massena Electric’s ability to monitor and respond to power outages.  Information from these meters will help Massena Electric identify the area of the outage, reducing response time to outages. Massena Electric still recommends that you report an outage by calling 315-764-0676.

  • Is the data related to these new meters secure, and will it remain private?

    Massena Electric protects the privacy of customer data and does not share, or sell, customer data to third parties.  The new meters will transmit usage information only, not personal information, and through an encrypted network that is unreadable and inaccessible to anyone outside of Massena Electric.
